Set and Setting: Mindset, Place and People on MDMA

'Set' is your mindset, 'setting' is where and with whom. Together they shape an experience more than the dose does.

"Set" is your mindset; "setting" is where you are and who you are with. Together they shape an experience more than the dose does - the same dose can be joyful or frightening depending on these two things.

Set: your mindset going in

How you feel beforehand tends to get amplified. Going in anxious, sleep-deprived, grieving, or hoping to escape something difficult raises the odds of a hard time. A settled, willing, rested headspace helps a lot. If you are in a bad place mentally, that is a reason to wait, not to push through.

Setting: where and with whom

Safety comes from people you trust and from not being alone. The risks differ by place:

  • At a festival: plan for heat and crowds, agree a meet-up point, keep water and electrolytes, and know where the welfare tent is.
  • At a retreat: vet the facilitator, ask how they handle a medical or psychological emergency, and plan your integration beforehand.
  • At home: a trusted, sober-enough sitter makes a real difference.

Heat is the quiet danger.

Many festival emergencies involve overheating, or - less often - drinking far too much plain water. Take breaks, sip steadily, and check on each other through the night.
