The experience, hour by hour
Taken orally, MDMA comes on in about 30-45 minutes. Effects peak around 60-90 minutes in and then ease off. A single dose lasts roughly 3-6 hours, and its half-life is long (around 7-9 hours), which means the drug is still being cleared well into the next day even after the felt effects are gone.

In the brain: the serotonin flood
MDMA enters serotonin neurons through the serotonin transporter (SERT), then runs SERT in reverse so serotonin pours out into the synapse instead of being pulled back in. Dopamine and norepinephrine are released too. That flood of serotonin is the warmth, openness and energy of the peak.
The load: heat and oxidative stress
The same surge, plus body heat, puts the brain under strain through oxidative stress. How much strain is shaped by dose, frequency, overheating and dehydration. This is why antioxidants are studied for neuroprotection, though most of that protective evidence is still at the animal stage and is not a green light.
The days after: depletion and the midweek low
Emptying the tank has a cost: serotonin is depleted for days while the brain resynthesises it, with a deeper low often landing around day five, the "Tuesday" low.
Full recovery: weeks, not days
Full normalization is estimated at roughly 2-6 weeks after a single moderate dose; heavier or repeated use lengthens it. Importantly, the evidence for lasting, selective serotonergic harm in humans is not conclusive, and that uncertainty is part of the honest picture.
