MDMA and St John's Wort
A serotonergic herbal supplement that adds to MDMA's serotonin load - best avoided close to a session.
Why this happens
St John's Wort has serotonergic activity of its own. Added to MDMA's serotonin release, it increases the overall serotonergic load and the theoretical risk of serotonin toxicity.
What this means in practice
Best avoided close to MDMA. If you take it for mood, treat it like an antidepressant and do not stack serotonergic drugs.
Warning signs - get help
Call your local emergency number straight away if you notice any of these:
- A high fever or skin that is hot to the touch
- Agitation, confusion or hallucinations
- Rigid, twitching or cramping muscles
- A racing heartbeat
- Heavy sweating or shivering
Information, not medical advice. Threshold does not promote or encourage MDMA use. This exists so that people who make their own choices can make safer, better-informed ones. It is not a substitute for professional care.
