MDMA: the dose, the heat, and the days after

MDMA floods the brain with serotonin, producing hours of euphoria followed by a multi-day depletion - the comedown. Recovery centres on refilling serotonin, buffering oxidative stress, and restoring the body.

MDMA (3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine) is an empathogen-stimulant whose primary action is forcing a massive release of stored serotonin while blocking its reuptake. The experience - warmth, empathy, euphoria - is essentially a few hours spent on serotonin you would normally release over many days.

The aftermath. Because the high spends serotonin rather than producing it, the days afterward run on a deficit: low mood, anxiety, fog, and cravings, typically peaking 2-4 days later (the "Tuesday blues"). On top of the serotonin dip sit oxidative stress, physical depletion, and sleep loss.

The real risks. Acute MDMA harm is dominated by temperature and fluid balance, not the milligram dose by itself. Overheating on a hot dancefloor and drinking too much plain water are both genuinely dangerous. Test your substance (adulterants are common and sometimes lethal), dose low by body weight, and decide limits while sober.

Recovery. Antioxidants and magnesium around the experience; electrolytes and sleep support that night; serotonin precursors and continued antioxidants in the days after. See the linked guides for the full protocol and the evidence behind each ingredient.

Educational only. Threshold does not sell or encourage the use of MDMA. The lowest-risk option is not to use.

What actually hurts people

  • Overheating (hyperthermia) and over-drinking plain water (hyponatremia) are the leading acute dangers - not the dose alone.
  • Never combine with serotonin precursors (5-HTP/tryptophan) the same day, or with SSRIs/MAOIs - serotonin syndrome risk.
  • Frequent, heavy use is where lasting harm lives; long gaps between sessions matter most.
