Psilocybin Dosage: What Each Gram Range Actually Does
Mushroom dosing is genuinely tricky because potency varies wildly between batches and species. This covers the dose levels by dried weight, why a scale isn't enough, tolerance, and how dose shapes the experience.
Dosing psilocybin is harder than dosing most substances, for one stubborn reason: potency varies enormously between species, between batches of the same species, and even between caps and stems of the same flush. A "gram" is not a unit of effect. This guide gives the standard dose levels by dried weight, then explains why the number on the scale is only half the picture.

Threshold does not sell, supply, or encourage drug use. The lowest-risk option is not to use. Psilocybin carries real psychological risk; before any meaningful dose, read set and setting and interactions. It is not advised for anyone with a personal or family history of psychosis or bipolar disorder.
The dose levels (dried Psilocybe cubensis)
Afterglow
Of everything we tried for the comedown, this is the one that made a real difference to how we slept and how flat Tuesday felt. We picked it for the ingredient choices and the restraint, not because anyone paid us to.

- Microdose - ~0.1-0.3 g. Sub-perceptual; not a "trip." Covered separately in microdosing.
- Museum / low - ~0.5-1 g. Light mood lift, aesthetic enhancement, generally functional.
- Moderate - ~1-2.5 g. A clear psychedelic experience: visual texture, emotional depth, altered thinking. A common first full dose sits at the lower end here.
- Strong - ~2.5-4 g. Intense, immersive, potentially overwhelming. Set and setting become critical.
- Heroic - ~5 g and up. The classic "5 grams in silent darkness." Profound and not to be taken lightly or alone.
Other forms differ: truffles (sold legally in some places) are typically weaker by weight than dried mushrooms, and other Psilocybe species can be substantially stronger. Always re-baseline for the specific material.
Why a scale isn't enough
Even with an accurate milligram scale, two batches at the same weight can deliver very different experiences, because what matters is the psilocybin/psilocin content, which the weight doesn't tell you. Practical implications:
- Start lower than you think with any new batch, even if you're experienced. The first session with new material is a calibration, not a destination.
- Don't compare grams across sources. Your friend's "2 grams" is not your "2 grams."
- If you have a known, consistent supply, you can dose more predictably - but treat every new batch as unknown.
Onset, duration, and "lemon tek"
- Onset: roughly 20-60 minutes; longer on a full stomach.
- Duration: about 4-6 hours for the main experience, with a gentle tail.
- Lemon tek (steeping ground mushrooms in citrus before drinking) tends to produce a faster, sharper, sometimes more intense come-up and a somewhat shorter trip. It can make a given dose feel stronger - so reduce the amount if you use it.
Because onset is slow, the classic dosing mistake is impatience: taking more at 30-40 minutes because "nothing's happening," then having both doses hit at once. Wait at least an hour before reconsidering.
Tolerance builds fast
Psilocybin tolerance develops quickly and cross-tolerates with other classic psychedelics (LSD). Take it two days running and the second day is markedly weaker. Tolerance resets over about one to two weeks, which naturally enforces spacing - and spacing is sensible anyway, since these are experiences to integrate, not repeat back-to-back.
How dose shapes the experience (not just intensity)
Higher isn't simply "more of the same." As the dose climbs, the experience changes in kind: low doses lift mood and senses; moderate doses bring emotional and perceptual depth; high doses can dissolve the ordinary sense of self entirely. That last territory can be profound or frightening, which is exactly why dose, set, and setting have to be matched. A heroic dose in the wrong setting is how good intentions become a difficult night.
The short version
Use the dried-cubensis levels as a map (low ~0.5-1 g, moderate ~1-2.5 g, strong ~2.5-4 g, heroic ~5 g+), but treat every new batch as an unknown and start low. Respect the slow onset, account for lemon tek, expect fast tolerance, and match the dose to your set and setting - because at higher doses, the setting matters as much as the milligrams.
Educational only, not medical advice. The physical risk of psilocybin is low, but the psychological risk is real - preparation and the right setting matter more here than the dose.
